Your Privacy and Security
Multiple Layers of Protection
We understand the sensitive and private nature of your back-up plan requires well in excess of that offered on most commercial Websites. The military-grade technologies and security policies we’ve implemented to protect the stored personal data of our members are thorough, layered, and overlapping, with each element ensuring the integrity of the next:
- First, access to our system is protected through hardened firewalls, patented intrusion detection systems, and fulltime staffing of network security professionals.
| Our Network Security: Our 100% Cisco Powered Network, built on hardened routers and audited by Cisco, ensures maximum security protection. Our secure server network incorporates a patented Intrusion Detection System to protect against external threats.
Firewalls are managed by security specialists and deployed in a 'private IP' space, while customer servers and routers are segregated in Virtual Local Area Networks (VLAN). Server hosting network security features also include multi-level privileges, OS lockdowns, centralized authentication and device change logs.
We employ advanced technologies to identify and address security weaknesses in Web-oriented servers, applications and activities. We constantly examine all firewalls, load-balancers, SSL accelerators and switches, as well as external developments, for any potential security events.

- Second, compartmentalized access: access to one persons account does not grant an online viewer access to view or interact with any other account or administrative information or system. If someone else’s account password is stolen, or guessed, malicious parties are still denied access to your account.
- Third, all information in your Emergency Contacts file, including all your back-up contact information, is encrypted and secured within our encrypted database. Your information is encrypted at all times from your browser to our server using SSL. Even if this information was intercepted, it would be impossible to read or understand.
Our Encryption Technologies: SSL, Short for Secure Sockets Layer, a protocol developed for transmitting private documents via the Internet. Since its introduction in 1994, SSL has been the de facto standard for e-commerce transaction security.
SSL uses a cryptographic system that uses two keys to encrypt data − a public key known to everyone and a private or secret key known only to the recipient of the message. The public key is used to encrypt information and the private key is used to decipher it.
When a browser points to a secured domain, a secure sockets layer handshake authenticates the server and the client and establishes an encryption method and a unique session key. They can begin a secure session that guarantees message privacy and message integrity. Emergency Contacts uses 128 bit encryption for the keys which is the strongest in the industry. 128-bit encryption offers 288 times as many possible combinations as 40-bit encryption. That’s over a trillion times stronger.

- Fourth, no information is accessed or reviewed by Emergency Contacts personnel unless a member is in an emergency situation. The personal information that members provide will only be used for the specific purposes for which it was intended and will never be shared with other organizations, except in responding to legal requirements and valid court orders.
- Fifth, only the information you have authorized to be released is provided to your contacts (or, in the case of medical information, confirmed medical personnel). We never share the information in your plan with anyone except for the specific information you have asked to be shared with the emergency contacts you have designated.
- Sixth, except for confirmed medical personnel, we only provide information to your designated contacts after we have initiated contact with them. Calling into the database with your number does not release your personal information or instructions to the caller, it simply sets in motion your plans and our efforts to notify your designated contacts. Callers can not “trick the system” into releasing your information.
Before Emergency Contacts, compromised privacy was the price for providing others with a way of contacting you during an emergency – you simply can not place your name, address, and phone number on your child’s backpack, your pet’s tags, or your briefcase without exposing your personal information.
Now, placing your membership information on these items provides far greater assurance of notification during an emergency while keeping your information private and secure.
