- Make a habit of updating your emergency contacts profile after important doctor visits. Diagnoses, prescriptions and dosages may change and you want to make sure the information in your profile is up-to-date.
- When you are designating emergency contacts, make sure you have chosen the most responsible people in your family or circle of friends. You want to make sure the people you choose are reliable and can handle stress and responsibility. Be sure to consider the persons age when you make these decisions.
- Be sure to let your designated contacts know you've included them in your plan. A quick email or phone call letting them know you've enrolled and included them in the profile may save confusion later. Be aware that some people may surprise you and say they don't think they can handle the responsibility.
- Make at least one of your emergency contacts someone who lives out of state or at least out of your immediate area. In disaster situations, local communication systems are often inoperable.
- We don't recommend putting the emergency contacts tags on a pet's collar without some other form of identification. Make certain your pet's name and at least one local phone number is on your pet's collar at all times
- If you don't already have them, consider buying a box of mailing labels from an office supply store. They are inexpensive and you can print your emergency contact information on them and place them on personel items. Honest people will have a way of returning your personal belongings this way.
