Frequently Asked Questions
Identification
Q. How will medical personnel find my ID?
Members ID cards should be kept in a wallet or purse, next to a drivers license or other government ID card. Medical personnel will see the Emergency Contacts ID card when they look for ID. In addition, Emergency Contacts provides windshield stickers and key tags that will alert medical personnel to their membership and direct them to call our emergency number. You can also print as many stickers as you would like using our online system.
Q. Will medical personnel recognize the Emergency Contact ID card?
Emergency Contacts is working to educate the nationwide community of medical and emergency professionals about our notification system and how it works. We have launched a nationwide campaign focused on reaching the rescue workers and hospital staff who are put in charge of identifying accident victims and alerting family. In addition, we are building relationships with key medical and emergency associations as an ongoing way of educating emergency professionals about our service.
Q. What if Im running or snowboarding and dont carry a wallet?
Members also receive key tags that can be attached to a jacket, belt loop, backpack, zipper or tied into the laces of an athletic shoe. Additionally, members can create their own stickers through our online system and attached them to helmets, bicycles, skateboards, etc.
Notification Process
Q. My family has one member number, how will rescue personnel tell which person is hurt?
Members' identification cards, key tags and stickers carry a letter in addition to the member number. These letters can be assigned to different family members by the account holder. This makes it easier for emergency responders to identify the injured person. No personally identifying information appears on the membership materials, so your private information and that of your children is always protected should your wallet or purse be stolen or lost.
Q. Can I call the toll-free number myself?
The Emergency Contacts system is for emergency use only and is designed to be used by emergency personnel when a member is incapacitated and cannot effectively communicate. However, if a member is in a serious situation and unable to communicate with all of his contacts, we are available to assist the member in calling them to ensure the emergency plan is fully implemented.
Q. What happens if one of my contacts cannot be reached?
Emergency Contacts will work nonstop using the numbers and information you have provided to reach each of your contacts. We keep a detailed log of each contact attempt and each successful notification. We only stop attempting to reach a contact when it has become indisputably clear that the person is unreachable or the contact information provided is wrong.
It is the responsibility of each member to ensure that the information of the contacts provided is current and accurate. To ensure the absolute privacy of our members and that only the proper contacts are notified in an emergency, we will not conduct searches for individuals if the information in the members plan is incorrect or outdated.
Q. How will Emergency Contacts personnel let my contacts know that something has happened to me? What information will they provide?
We notify your contacts that you have been involved in an emergency situation and relay information as you have outlined in your plan. Per your instructions, your contacts will be given the details about where you are (hospital name, address and location) and the names of key hospital or medical personnel who can provide additional information.
Emergency Contacts does not gather or disseminate detailed injury reports or medical information. Our job is to quickly inform your contacts of the emergency situation so they can reach you and take care of the responsibilities you have requested they manage.
Q. What happens if an accident is fatal? What will Emergency Contacts tell specified contacts?
At Emergency Contacts, we believe that notification of death is a highly sensitive communication that should be delivered by emergency and medical professionals who are able to provide family members and friends with the information and support they will need. We gather specific contact and location information from the rescue worker, medical staff or police officer who has made contact. We then alert each contact by letting them know that an emergency situation has been reported. We provide any emergency instructions left by the member and give each contact the information needed to immediately contact the authorities or medical professionals.
Privacy Protection
Q. Is my information private?
All information in your Emergency Contacts file, including all your back-up contact information, is confidential and secured on our encrypted database. No information is accessed or reviewed unless a member is in an emergency situation. Emergency Contacts gives only confirmed medical personnel the health and personal information you authorized to be provided. We never share the information in your plan with anyone except the specific emergency contacts you have designated.
Emergency Contacts respects our members privacy. The personal information that members provide will only be used for the specific purposes for which it was intended and will not be shared with other organizations. Emergency Contacts may use members information to provide and improve our services, respond to legal requirements and valid court orders, and perform analyses for our own purposes.
Q. Is my information secure?
We have implemented technologies and security policies to protect the stored personal data of our members from unauthorized access, improper use, alteration, unlawful or accidental destruction and accidental loss. Your information is encrypted at all times from your browser to our server using SSL. We protect personal information in our database using industry standard public key encryption. We will continue to enhance our securities procedures as new technology becomes available.
Personal Contact Information & Profile

Q. What if some of my contact information is out of date?
It is the responsibility of each member to ensure that the information given for each contact is current and accurate. Emergency Contacts encourages and reminds its members to regularly review and update their emergency plans as this is the only contact information that will be used to reach these individuals.
To ensure the absolute privacy of our members and that only the proper person is notified in an emergency, we will not conduct searches for individual contacts if the information in the members plan is incorrect or outdated.
Q. How many contacts can I sign up?
Membership entitles each individual to designate up to five contacts.
Q. What vital information should I include in my profile?
Your profile should include any medical information you want Emergency Contacts to communicate to the rescue or medical worker who alerts us of the emergency. In addition to listing the names and contact information of each of your contacts, your profile should include any specific instructions you want given to each individual. For example, you may want a trusted babysitter or family member to pick up and care for your children. Or, you may have pets that need to be looked after or want your house to be secured. In your profile, you will be given the opportunity to give specific instructions to each of your contacts.
My Documents
Q. How do I upload my documents?
Login to your account as normal and click the View/Edit link next to the cardholder you wish to upload documents for. Once on the Family/Household Member Details page you can press the Upload New Document button at the bottom of the page to upload documents.
Q. Why would I want to store personal documents with my Emergency Contacts membership?
Any document stored with your membership can be easily accessed, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week from anywhere there is an internet connection. That means your critical documents are available in the event of an emergency or any time you need them.
Q. Who has access to my documents?
Every time you upload a document, you have the option to allow Emergency Contacts agents to send the information to emergency service providers or to keep the information private. If you elect to keep the information private, you should give account access information to a responsible party so they can retrieve the document if you are unable to do so.
Q. What type of document can I store with my other account information?
You may store any document you think would be important in an emergency situation such as a living will, durable power of attorney, kids fingerprints, medication lists, etc. Since most of these items will require signatures or notarization to be legally binding, documents will need to be scanned before they are uploaded.
Q. What if I dont have a scanner?
Many people have access to scanners through friends or at work if they dont own one. You can also visit a local copy store where they can scan your document and provide you with an electronic version for uploading.
Q. How many documents can I store in my account?
The document storage option allows up to 2mb of space or approximately forty 50 kb files. Scanning of documents should be done at 300 dpi resolution to ensure good quality and optimize space. Scanned images should be saved as pdf documents or JPEGs to ensure good quality and optimize space.
Q. Where can I get a childrens fingerprint kit?
Your local police or sheriffs department can take your childrens fingerprints usually at no charge. Also, the Polly Klaas Foundation has a free Child Identification Booklet. You can find this in our Stay Safe section under Child Safety.
